There is a singularity at the heart of every blackhole

“Later, Helfer reminded the audience that she once dated Firefly’s Nathan Fillion, which was no doubt a simultaneously gratifying and painful revelation for the fanboys in attendance.” [also] It’s a Cylon lie! They mess with your mind! Hey, but, maybe Nathan is one of the final five? Then, they need to get Mark Hamill to do a role … and then Galactica will finally reach critical mass and spontaneously collapse into a blackhole of Sci Fi self-reference!

“Do you believe in the right to demand a raise? Health care coverage? A pension? Do you believe workers should have a voice in their workplaces? The fate of the Employee Free Choice Act depends on your work. Help score an important victory for worker’s rights and for rebuilding America’s middle class. In Solidarity, Governor Howard Dean, M.D.” [et, et, et, et] And, you know, as long as we’re, as Dean says, “in solidarity” then you might also gander at the IWW too.

“When the leaders of a major economy lapse into mysticism and come to believe they can accomplish things through their mental vibrations, without lifting a finger – then it’s time to start thinking about going into subsistence farming on a remote compound in Idaho.”

“Who are the elites? Anybody with enough guns or enough money, or both, to violate the rules with impunity if they want to. Now every one of those countries have groups that violate the rules with impunity, even though they have a constitutional order, I mean, a piece of paper. So I’m looking at countries where the rules have been made stick. By this standard, when did we get a Constitution? Only in 1865.” [via]

The blue plate special

Geeky cool collection of number trivia can be found at: “What’s Special About This Number?” [via] And, here I was always proud of my favourite numbers being 2 and 9, the smallest even whole number and the largest odd. Well, fine then, at least I still have “Etaoin Shrdlu” for a favourite word to feel self-important about. (And, if necessary, I can always fall back on the way I spell “favourite” as a last resort.)

“The golden eyeball is engraved with lines coming out of a central circle like rays of light.” [via]

“Given that astronomical objects, stars, constellations, etc., have a major importance in much of Amazonian mythology and cosmology, it does not in any way surprise me that such an observatory exists.” [via]

“We have a woodcut of an easily carved stone with a distinctive shape being cut in two at Stonehenge, and we have accounts of a curious altar stone as described by Inigo Jones being transported to somewhere called St James. We have drawn a blank at the Palace of St James, but when we look at the nearby village of Berwick St James, we find two standing stones that once formed two bridges across a stream, and if we mentally reunite the parts, they bear an uncanny resemblance to the stone in the woodcut.” [via]

“What is it … what is it really.” [via]

“Whether or not we have noticed our overlaps and our commonalities, society certainly hasn’t failed to lump us all together.” [via]

Waiting for The Tin Man

No, not “thin” but “tin” …

Apparently, there’s a retelling of Oz in miniseries form coming in December to the Sci Fi channel. Staring Zooey Dechanel as DG and Alan Cummings as the title role. I hope it’s a good one. Check out more at Slice of Scifi.

I could see someone like Peter Jackson taking on the whole series of books, especially the first 6 of them, as a whole series of movies or shows. That sure would be something to see.

Self-help horror for the overlord

In the right circumstances, this “How To Survive a Horror Movie!” list could be quite useful. I also laughed as I read it:

“As a general rule, don’t solve puzzles that open portals to Hell.”

Ah, good times … good times …

Reminds me, of course, of the phenomenally classic “Evil Overlord List” which has been around for ages. If you’ve never seen it, you might want to check this one out too.

Is “video me” latin for “I see myself”?

This should send a chill down the spine of all members of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Pumpkins:

And, apparently, when a friend saw this video, she was reminded of me, for some reason:
