Home meat delivery logo with J. R. “Bob” Dobbs?

— John Bell @ 3:45 pm Perm Link Cosmos

The other day, I saw a van with text on the side saying that it was some kind of home meat delivery service that also had a logo with the head of the Church of the SubGenius [also] icon J. R. “Bob” Dobbs with a black bowtie. What the heck? Was this real? Was this someone from the ChickenHed?

antsy

my ancestors are antsy
when I ask them for answers
or to be my allies
they sense I’m not serious
about survival
and want to see
me make sacrifices
willingly, fiercely
to do what is required
by society to be successful
none of them really understand
except grandma dragon
this path I’m on
and what I’m asking them to do
when I haven’t done it either

Oppose the Mortgage Lender Housing Bailout

— John Bell @ 12:55 pm Perm Link Cosmos

Another savings & loan bailout? Another chrysler bailout? Why is our society being asked to subside predatory business practices and rampant speculation … again? Boom & bust economic cycles shouldn’t be encouraged by rewarding those that participate in the willfully risky behaviour that makes them happen. There’s a time for real and important economic assistance to people, and there’s times when it’s merely a way to reinforce inequity and merely a subsidy to industry masked as if it were assistance to individuals.

angryrenter.com

How about this: instead of bailing out another industry, let’s re-visit the bankruptcy laws and make personal bankruptcy a viable and functional option for people in need of protection, instead of making the process another captured regulation?

iron and sulphur

— John Bell @ 1:03 pm Perm Link Cosmos

a magical journal
of attempts and results
to contact myself
the echo chamber of my self
and the echo is not answered
as it once was
by the muse and the burning
need to write and rhyme
with assonance and consonance
I used to know that hidden holy part of myself
and I called it inspiration
but somehow it was tied to sadness and sorrow
that felt more real than myself
like my personality was a peel on the outside of a bitter fruit
pit and pith and juice of cold iron and sulfur

I have a wound in my side that will not heal
leaking energy to the four winds
and to the depths of hell
where I will eventually send myself
if I do not get well
from this sickness in my soul
that yearns for what is not real
I lost my innocence and my trust
and all that remains is the remains
of a corpse once full of strength
but weakened by feeling of emptiness
and need for love
to match the love I cried out to give
no gifts I have even been given
could match the grail I wanted to have
and so I have never been satisfied
distracted by this noise
I’ve missed my call to action

J: Hachis Parmentier.
V: Hachis Parmentier! What name they cream?
J: Cream is but cream, only they say le crème.” [via]

and the tears prove
I never fully let go
how can I dare curse
someone else with this

nothing but smoke

like no love
no love there
like love

Ecotopia rising

— John Bell @ 6:08 pm Perm Link Cosmos

“”Our region should declare its independence,” Nickels said.” [via]

“Ernest Callenbach, in the fictional setting of Ecotopia Rising, described a further escalation of the same phenonmenon, as an increasingly desperate corporate system lashed out against the human-scale society replacing it.”

“In Portland, people interested in Cascadian independence have already begun organizing.”

“We want to share our money to break down some of the walls of capitalism.”

“But regardless of where you draw the lines, the fact remains that these recently colonized lands shelter a distinct identity that exists nowhere else on earth.”

“In practice we are not too dissimilar from our brethren across the country who remain unwilling to exchange our daily conveniences for the good of our social, economic, environmental and political welfare.”

Amy Denio at Kennedy School on Aug 21st

— John Bell @ 2:41 pm Perm Link Cosmos

So, Amy Denio will be in town for the Monsters of the Accordion tour (but the website still is talking about the 2007 tour?), whatever that is, but how can it not be fun? That’s going to be at the Kennedy School on Aug 21st. Apparently Eric Stern of Vagabond Opera has been part of this tour, so might be again this year?

Freakshow A Go-Go at Hippodrome on May 17th at 8pm

— John Bell @ 2:32 pm Perm Link Cosmos

Another flyer I noticed, the Freakshow A Go-Go is going to be at the Hippodrome on May 17th. It’s 21+ but smoke-free and it’s only $10 advance tickets.

“A night of vaudevillian genderf*ck
featureing performers from
austin – chicago
san francisco
sante fe – portland
Sat May 17th
7pm doors 8pm show
10pm dance party”

There’s a pretty amusing review of an old event at the Hippodrome on the Willamette Weekly website:

” I mean, how much weirder can Portland get? Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you The Hippodrome, Portland’s newest venue, nonstop circus and proof that this city is still the bull-goose looney it claims to be.”

Inside Hamlet’s Head at Performance Works on Apr 19th at 8pm

— John Bell @ 2:21 pm Perm Link Cosmos

The flyer says:

“To celebrate William Shakespeare’s 444th birthday, take a journey with Johnny Stallings inside Hamlet’s head. It’s going to be fun!!!”

Well, anything good enough to warrant three exclamation points has got to be seen to be believed!!!

This is at Performance Works Northwest, although it’s not on their upcoming events page, with a suggested donation of $10 as a benefit for Open Hearts Open Minds, which is an organization where the performer is the executive director.

Leon Redbone at Aladdin on Apr 18th at 8pm

— John Bell @ 2:13 pm Perm Link Cosmos

It’s been a long time since I first saw Leon Redbone live at Jake’s in Olympia, which was a venue attached to the old Cracker’s but is now a gay bar. It’s been even longer since I saw Leon Redbone for the first time on TV as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. I suppose I’m surprised he’s still around, to be honest. But, not only is he around but he’s in town on Apr 18th at the Aladdin Theatre.
