- AIG’s complaint is another reason govt is necessary: to condition, modify and maybe even cancel contracts that fail the common interest. #
- The commons isn’t an emerging metaphor for space b/w public and private. It’s space between one owned and another, and it’s not really new. #
- The “third place” is between private and public, and that’s not identical to “commons” because it can be owned, a la french cafe or McCoffee #
- Or, really 3rd place is b/w “home” and “work” but still often already enclosed, like Starbucks, and subject to conditions by an owner. #
- To mistake the two is a kind of insidious mistake … #
- Commons is public, truly collective; and that’s a really worthy and radical thing to keep and recover. #
- There’s always the danger that private ownership will condition or close a third place that’s not also commons. #
- And, private ownership tries already to enclose commons, such as using “copyright” to stop people from taking pictures in public places … #
- And, if they’ll do that to commons; how can permissiveness be assumed safe in non-commons third places? #
- The battle cry: don’t replace your real commons with prosthetic commons! #
- @joguldi Just don’t take too many to bed at once! Danger of a “Scholar’s Mistress” a la Fritz Leiber … in reply to joguldi #
- @joguldi And that’s just awkward for everyone … in reply to joguldi #
- @joguldi It’s okay. Just tell Pierre we’re laughing with him, not at him. in reply to joguldi #
- @joguldi Oh wow. Pierre Nora’s Realms of Memory sounds great. in reply to joguldi #
- @tonydk12 Very interesting. Enclosure was a very big deal. The victorian parks in London exist because they were owned too. in reply to tonydk12 #
- @tonydk12 Most of the Highlands are still owned, for example. But, there were common grazing areas, & c. in reply to tonydk12 #
- @tonydk12 Nat’l park lands in the US were a really big innovation. Diggers & Levelers … Lots of land use issues historically. Great link! in reply to tonydk12 #
- @tonydk12 There’s ebb and flow to it too. Enclosure in the 18th c. but, the dark ages movement from land to land was restricted too. in reply to tonydk12 #
- @tonydk12 But, “land” wasn’t all land. There really were wilds beyond the “land” which was human worked. in reply to tonydk12 #
- @jgbell Crossing the Alps, there are free huts for travelers; people hike from Germany to Italy for vacation along ancient routes still. in reply to jgbell #
- @tonydk12 Yeah, J B Jackson had some really interesting analysis of “land” and “landscape” that I enjoyed. in reply to tonydk12 #
- @tonydk12 The role of “forest” in folklore is another interesting avenue … in reply to tonydk12 #
- @tonydk12 Well, there were concepts of continuity, but rights to land weren’t permanent except as maybe a moral right of some kind. in reply to tonydk12 #
- @tonydk12 Right, but there were unowned lands as well, borders and wilds, where people could go, maybe far but there. in reply to tonydk12 #
- @tonydk12 Great stuff! Thanks! in reply to tonydk12 #
- @tonydk12 “neglected” also codified as “unimproved” … and “land” was what had been improved. moral right to waste was abrogated … in reply to tonydk12 #
- … as unimproved. that was one way that native americans were divested of land, by claims on their “unimproved” land. #
- @tonydk12 RT myself: … as unimproved. that was one way that native americans were divested of land, by claims on their “unimproved” land. in reply to tonydk12 #
- There’s just not enough time or energy to study and learn everything that interests me … I’d love to spend years and years on such things. #
- Wow. Apparently, tweets about torrents of TV shows go out minutes after the shows are over … that’s quick service from the black market! #
- @tonydk12 My concentrations at Evergreen were “Political Economy” and “Political Philosophy”! in reply to tonydk12 #
- @unicursal I saw them as I watch a twitter search on the topic. I admit it was about “Castle” but I bet there’s some for other shows too! in reply to unicursal #
- @Dan_Christensen It’s like the lull before the storm. Saw that for Buffy … darkest before the storm. I bet the 2 hour finale will be wild in reply to Dan_Christensen #

- Looks like Tribes is coming back via instantaction.com but I’m screwed because I’m on a PPC mac … A few support mac, but intel only. #
- Whoa. Wait. They said they got the IP to the “entire Starsiege universe including Tribes” … GarageGames … it’s come full circle! #
- Does that mean new titles too?! #
- Here’s where they say they’ve ‘obtained’ the IP … does that mean own? http://tinyurl.com/ck74cj #
- My little nostalgic geek heart is aflutter about the idea of Tribes coming back from the dead. #
- I would have said my heart was “atwitter” but I just couldn’t bring myself to twitter that. #
